Indian citizens traveling to Ho Chi Minh City must complete two mandatory immigration steps before boarding their flight. First, you need an approved Vietnam e-visa. Second, you must submit the Pre-Arrival Declaration Form at prearrival.immigration.gov.vn within 72 hours of your scheduled arrival at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN).
India does not have a bilateral or unilateral visa exemption agreement with Vietnam. This means Indian passport holders cannot rely on visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry. Proper preparation is essential to avoid delays at SGN immigration.
Do Indian Citizens Need a Visa for Vietnam?
Yes. Indian nationals must obtain an e-visa before traveling to Vietnam. Apply through the official portal at evisa.gov.vn. The standard processing time is three to five business days.
Your approved e-visa PDF certificate contains four key details you will need for the Pre-Arrival Declaration Form. Locate your visa number (starts with N, exactly 9 characters), the issue date, the expiry date, and the issued place, which will read "Online" for digital applications.
Do not travel before your e-visa is officially approved. You cannot complete the Pre-Arrival Declaration Form without an approved visa number.
How to Fill the Pre-Arrival Declaration Form — Indian Citizens
Submit the form within 72 hours before your SGN arrival. Open prearrival.immigration.gov.vn and select India as your nationality.
On Step 2 in the visa information section, select "Electronic Visa (E-Visa)" from the dropdown. Enter your visa number exactly as printed on your certificate — copy and paste it to avoid errors. Enter the issue date and expiry date in DD/MM/YYYY format. For the issued place, type "Online".
Proceed to Step 3 and select your arriving flight. Most Indian travelers connect through hubs such as Singapore (SIN), Kuala Lumpur (KUL), Bangkok (BKK), or the Middle East. Select the flight code for your final leg into SGN only.
Take a screenshot of the Step 4 confirmation page. This is your proof of submission and is required at both airline check-in and SGN immigration.
Connecting Flights from India — What Departure Country to Enter
There are limited direct flights between India and Ho Chi Minh City. Most Indian travelers connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, or Middle Eastern hubs.
On the declaration form, the departure country is the country where your last flight to SGN departs. If you fly Air India from Mumbai to Singapore and then Singapore Airlines to Ho Chi Minh City, your departure country is Singapore.
Use the flight code for the Singapore-to-SGN leg only. Do not enter your Mumbai departure flight details.
Common Mistakes Indian Travelers Make
Selecting the wrong visa type is the most frequent error. Indian citizens must always select "Electronic Visa (E-Visa)". Selecting "Visa exemption" or leaving the field blank will cause a mismatch at immigration.
Entering the wrong dates is another common issue. The visa issue date and expiry date on the form must exactly match your approved e-visa PDF. Even a single digit error can invalidate your submission.
Submitting too early is also a problem. Many Indian travelers try to complete the form days in advance. The system only accepts submissions within the 72-hour window. If you try earlier, your flight will not appear.
